How the Multiverse Broke the Timeline
Type: Mythology / Timeline CollapseThe mythology of Supernatural changed dramatically over fifteen seasons. What began as a relatively straightforward creation story eventually expanded to include the Darkness, alternate worlds, and finally a multiverse. The question is whether those later additions fit the mythology the show had already established, or whether they create contradictions the series never resolves.
Exhibit A: The First Creation

The show establishes that the Leviathans were God’s first creations, before man or angels. It presents a clear creation timeline for monsters: Leviathans are locked in Purgatory, where Eve is born. She eventually reaches Earth and creates the Alphas, who in turn create Earth’s monsters.
Death specifically says, “Before God created man or angels, he created the first beasts, the Leviathans. He created Purgatory to lock them away” (7x02, “Meet the New Boss”). It is revealed that Eve was born in Purgatory (6x19, “Mommy Dearest”). Edgar, a Leviathan, insults Eve as “barely” related to them (7x20, “The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo”).
The Leviathans were first. They were locked in Purgatory, where Eve was born. She reaches Earth and spawns the Alphas, who create the monsters. The creation timeline is clear on this point.
Exhibit B: Introduction of the Darkness/Amara

Does the introduction of the Darkness create problems for the established timeline and mythology? It complicates the timeline by raising the question of what actually came first.
The show reveals that the Darkness, or Amara, was older than God (11x02, “Form and Void”). Death is willing to send Dean to the furthest reaches of space because he is so afraid of her (10x22, “The Prisoner”). This presents the Darkness as a massive threat to creation.
The Mark of Cain is revealed to be what held the Darkness in a void (10x22, “The Prisoner”). The Mark was originally placed on Lucifer (11x20, “Don’t Call Me Shurley”). It corrupted him, and he later transferred it to Cain. Chuck also reveals himself as God, and it is shown that the archangels were created to fight the Darkness.
This creates a problem with the earlier creation timeline. If the Leviathans were God’s first creations before man or angels, where do they fit in relation to Amara and the archangels? Amara existed before creation, while the archangels were made to fight her. Yet Death specifically described the Leviathans as the first beasts created by God. Amara also admits to destroying all of Chuck’s creations (11x22, “We Happy Few”).
The introduction of Amara complicates the established timeline. It is unclear whether the Leviathans were created before the archangels, or where they fit into the war between Chuck and Amara. The show never clearly explains how the Leviathans fit into this new version of the creation story.
Exhibit C: Apocalypse World

Does the introduction of Apocalypse World add to the mythology and timeline, or does it rupture it further? It creates more problems the show does not thoroughly explain.
Sam and Dean end up in a world where Michael won the Apocalypse against Lucifer (12x23, “All Along the Watchtower”). In that world, Lucifer is dead and Michael rules with an iron fist. Michael wants to destroy other worlds to spite Chuck. In this world, Mary Winchester never made the deal with Azazel to save John (13x01, “Lost and Found”).
If Apocalypse World is a separate universe, the show has to answer several questions about its creation:
- Did it have its own Leviathans and Purgatory?
- Did it have its own Mark and its own Lucifer?
- Did it have its own Death and its own Amara?
The introduction of Apocalypse World creates too many unanswered questions about the timeline. The show does not adequately address them.
Exhibit D: The Multiverse

Apocalypse World already creates a problem because the mythology now has to account for a second universe. The multiverse makes that problem potentially infinite.
Chuck admits he has been a writer controlling Sam and Dean all along (14x20, “Moriah”). Sam shoots Chuck and is given dozens of visions of himself and Dean in alternate worlds (15x02, “Raising Hell”). Chuck reveals that the monster world Sam saw is another world. He later decides to end all other worlds (15x17, “Unity”).
The revelation of a multiverse of Sams and Deans fundamentally breaks the already fragile timeline created by the introduction of the Darkness and Apocalypse World. The show presents the Earth Prime archangels as the first creations made to fight the Darkness. This already contradicts the earlier claim that the Leviathans were the first creations.
How does Chuck create entire other worlds while locked in a war with Amara? Does every world get its own Leviathans, its own Purgatory, its own Mark of Cain, and its own cage? The show never explains how any of this fits the timeline it already established.
There aren’t reasonable answers that adequately explain how Chuck could create multiple Earths within the rules the series itself set down.
